EPIDEMIA DE COLERA EN HAITI 2010

DEFINITIVAMENTE UN DESASTRE DE SALUD EN UN PAIS MUY POBRE DE AMERICA QUE AMENAZA POR MANTENERSE EN EL TIEMPO Y EXPANDIRSE A OTROS PAISES, AREAS Y REGIONES CON CONDICIONES SANITARIAS SEMEJANTES.

EPIDEMIOLOGY
On December 29, The Ministry of Health of Haiti (Ministère de la Sante Publique et de la Population, MSPP) reported that the cumulative number of cholera cases was 148,787 and deaths due to cholera was 3,333, as of December 26. Of the total cholera cases, 83,166 patients have been hospitalized. The overall case fatality rate was 2.2%. Although epidemics tend to follow a certain pattern, we cannot predict exactly how they will evolve. The mortality rate will depend on the response. Without access to treatment (either at home or in a health facility) the mortality rate rises from 1% to as high as 25-50% for severe cases.
